A Childcare Center Designed with Purpose – Built for the Future

February 19, 2025
The new Acorn childcare center is more than just a daycare—it’s a thoughtfully designed space built specifically for early childhood education. Every element of the center reflects Acorn’s philosophy of learning, creativity, and well-being.

Designed for Growth and Exploration

Each classroom is spacious and intentionally designed to support the Reggio Emilia approach. Key features include:

  • Long-term project areas where children can engage in hands-on learning.
  • Provocation tables that inspire curiosity and critical thinking.
  • Calming corners to support emotional well-being.
  • Large play spaces that encourage movement and collaboration.

For Group Daycare, an additional art / circle time room provides a dedicated space for creative expression and focused learning.

The Infant & Toddler rooms include a purpose-built nap room with fresh air circulation and adjustable night shades, ensuring a restful environment.

Prioritizing Natural Light & Calming Atmosphere

Natural light is an essential part of the design, with floor-to-ceiling windows maximizing daylight exposure. Additionally, LED lighting with adjustable temperature settings allows for a soothing and dynamic learning environment, creating an optimal space for young learners.

A Thoughtful Space for Educators

Acorn recognizes that happy, supported educators create the best childcare environments. The new center features:

  • A dedicated staff room for collaboration and relaxation.
  • A fully equipped kitchen for safe food preparation and storage.
  • An open-concept entrance where families can observe their child’s transition during drop-off and pick-up.

Mindfully Integrated into the Community

The playground, facing the back alley, is carefully designed to preserve a historical heritage tree, a joint effort between Acorn and the City of Port Moody. Unlike conventional playgrounds filled with static equipment, Acorn’s design promotes creativity-driven play, allowing teachers to create custom outdoor games and activities.

The center’s entrance is strategically placed along Hugh Street, offering street parking for easy drop-off and pick-up. Additional private parking and waste management areas are located at the rear, ensuring a safe and efficient flow of movement for families.

A Collaborative Effort with 40 Years of Expertise and a Vision for the Future

The development of this center has been a joint effort between Acorn’s 40 years of childcare experience, SwissReal as the developer, Aultrust’s vision for community-driven investment, CIP Modular Builders, AMA Architects, and an incredible team of vendors who have ensured that every detail meets the highest standards of safety, functionality, and innovation.

This project is a testament to strategic collaboration, bringing together expertise in education, development, and investment to create a scalable solution to the childcare crisis.
