Port Moody is set to welcome its first Temporary Use Permit (TUP) childcare center, a trailblazing initiative led by Acorn Education Management Group. After securing full city approvals, including the final building permit, this project is now on track to deliver an innovative, modular childcare solution—one that sets a precedent for future locations.
The modular childcare center is currently under construction and will arrive on-site in phases. The first section is expected Mid-March, with full installation and functionality anticipated by April. The final steps, including landscaping and playground installation, are scheduled for completion in April, with a high likelihood of opening by May.
This project is not just about a new childcare center—it’s about solving a growing community crisis. Aultrust, a previous Community Builder Award winner, has played a crucial role in financing the project, alongside SwissReal, a company with 40 years of development expertise. Together, they are turning this concept into a repeatable solution to address the childcare shortage.
The demand for quality childcare is undeniable—within days of installing a site sign in late January, over 200 families joined the waitlist. Family orientations will begin in March, ensuring registration is completed well before opening. This proactive approach allows Acorn to shift focus toward expanding into additional locations, bringing more childcare solutions to the community.
This milestone would not have been possible without the support of local champion Fred Soofi, who generously leased the land for 15 years at a favorable rate. His dedication, combined with collaborative efforts between Acorn and city officials, has streamlined the permitting process, setting the stage for future approvals to move even faster.
With this first-of-its-kind childcare model now a reality, Acorn Management is committed to replicating its success and expanding its reach to support more families.
